1. Physical Properties Of
Hydrochloric Acid:
1. It is a colorless acid.
2. It has sharp irritating smell.
3. It has sour taste.
4. It is heavier than air.
5. It gives fumes in must air.
6. It turns blue utmus to red
2. Chemical Properties Of
Hydrochloric Acid:
Hydrochloric acid is acidic in nature because it
exibits all the usuall properties of an acid.
Some of the chemical properties of
hydrochloric acid are as under. 2.
1. Reaction With Water: Hydrochloric acid when added to water splits
into hydrocanium ions and chloride ions.
H2o(1) + HCl(g) ---> H3o+(aq) + Cl- (aq) 2.2.
Reaction With Metals: Hydrochloric acid reacts with some metals
forming metals chlorides and hydrogen gas.
Mg + 2HCl ---> MgCl2 + H2 2.3.
Reaction With Ammonia: Hydrochloric acid neutralizes ammonia
forming ammonia chloride.
NH3 + HCl ---> NH4Cl 2.4.
Reaction With Bases: Hydrochloric acid react with bases to form
salts and water e.g
HCl + NaCh ---> NaCl + H2o. HCl + Koh ---> Kcl + H2o. 2.5.
Reaction With Carbonates and
Baicarbonates: Hydrochloric acid react with carbonates and
hydrogen carbonates to liberate Co 2, e.g
CaCo3 + 2HCl ---> CaCl2 + Cl2 + H2o NaHCo3 + HCl ---> NaCl + Co2 + H2o 2.6.
Reaction With Silver Nitrate: When hydrochloric acid is added to silver
nitrate solution a white precipitate of silver
chloride is formed.
AgNo3 (aq) + HCl(aq) ---> AgCl + HNo3 3.
Uses Of Hydrogen Chloride
(Hydrochloric Acid)
1. It is used in the manufacturing of plastics, dyes, textile, rubber and
medicines.
2. It is used in the preparation of aqua regia.
3. It is used as a reagent in laboratory.
4. It is used for the extraction of glue from animal tissue and bones.
5. It is used for the cleaning of iron sheets during electroplating.
6. It is used to clean calcium carbonate deposits from sanitary and floors.
